MOJO # 39: Want to find your unique voice and style? Start by copying others

We've all heard it: "Good artists copy, great artists steal."

But how?

How do you steal like an artist?

If you think about his words, what Picasso is saying here is that all artists copy, all the time.

The difference is that a great artist appropriates the thing they copied, so much so that they make it their own.

Hence, "stealing" it.

There is a lot of stigma around copying because most people misinterpret originality and creativity.

The truth is, we all copy.

We do it whether we realize it or not.

And we do it whether we like it or not.

Not because we are weak, or faulty.

But because that's how intelligence works.

You need to copy. In fact, the more varied your copying, the more original and unique the outcome.

In this video, I talk about how copying others can help you find your own voice and unique, authentic style.
