MOJO # 59: Is it out of alignment, or are you just procrastinating?

That resistance you feel, is it a sign that the thing you're about to do is out of alignment?

How do you know if it's just an excuse your mind is making up to avoid doing the work?

You may not know this, but years ago, I used to be all about that hustle.

I would wake up at 5 a.m. (after going to bed pretty late) and go straight to my laptop.

Huffin' and puffin' on whatever I could smoke, guzzling black and bitter coffee, typing away while listening to 5 podcasts in the background about advanced things I really didn't need to be learning about (yet).

I dulled my senses and my emotions, and the concept of paying attention to how I felt about the work wasn't even in my field of consciousness. 

"Feelings are for suckers", I used to think.

If I'm being honest, I still have residues of self-judgment around giving my feelings a sense of importance. At some level, part of me thinks it makes me weak to do so.

But in 2020, I burned out. And by early 2021, I could no longer push through.

The crazy thing is, I wasn't working as hard.

In fact, I had slowed down so much that at the time, I was barely spending a couple of hours a day, if at all. The business almost ran itself.

But even small tasks like responding to a simple email felt like a huge burden.

So in early 2021, I rebelled completely.

I rejected all mainstream business and marketing best practices, and I became all about ease and flow.

The problem is that I took it to an extreme, and it started to become an excuse to avoid doing the work.

I started to seek comfort again, and I knew then that I had to give myself a loving nudge so that the universe didn't have to give me the cosmic two-by-four.

Here is some of what I learned since:

  • If it doesn't feel good, it doesn't mean it's out of alignment.
  • If something was in alignment when you thought of it, but you start questioning when it's time to do it, it's likely fear talking.
